Unpacking and Setup

Unpack and inspect contents. Place on a stable, level surface near a power outlet.

  1. Remove all tape and protective materials from the printer.
  2. Connect the power cord to the printer and plug into a 120V AC outlet.
  3. Turn on the printer using the power button.
  4. Follow on-screen prompts to select language and region.

WARNING! Do not touch the print head or ink cartridge contacts. Keep printer horizontal during setup.

Installing Ink Cartridges

Install genuine Canon PG-245 (black) and CL-246 (color) cartridges.

  1. Open the front cover; the print head carrier moves to the center.
  2. Remove the new cartridge from its package and gently remove the protective tape.
  3. Insert the black cartridge into the left slot and the color cartridge into the right slot until they click into place.
  4. Close the front cover. The printer will begin initial ink charging (takes about 2 minutes).

CAUTION! Do not turn off the printer during ink charging. Install cartridges immediately after unpacking to prevent drying.

Access functions via the control panel buttons and OLED screen.

Buttons: Power, Stop, Color Copy, Black Copy, Scan, Wi-Fi, Alphanumeric keypad.

Connecting to Your Network

Connect via Wi-Fi for wireless printing from computers and mobile devices.

  1. Press the Wi-Fi button on the control panel.
  2. Use the arrow buttons to select "Wireless LAN setup" and press OK.
  3. Select your network (SSID) from the list and enter the password using the alphanumeric keypad.
  4. Confirm connection when the Wi-Fi LED lights solid blue.
  5. Install printer software on your computer using the setup CD or download from Canon website.

Tip: For WPS connection, press and hold the Wi-Fi button until the LED flashes, then press your router's WPS button within 2 minutes.

Printing Documents and Photos

Supports printing from various applications and mobile devices via Canon PRINT app.

  1. Load paper in the rear tray (adjust guide to paper size).
  2. On your computer, select "Print" from the application menu.
  3. Choose "Canon MX490 series" as the printer.
  4. Select paper type, quality, and other settings in the print dialog.
  5. Click Print. The printer will start after processing data.
  6. For duplex printing, enable "Two-sided printing" in the print dialog.

WARNING! Do not open covers or remove paper during printing. Use recommended paper types for best results.

Scanning and Copying

Use the flatbed scanner or ADF for scanning and copying documents.

Copying:

  1. Place document face down on scanner glass or in ADF.
  2. Press Color Copy or Black Copy on the control panel.
  3. Use the arrow buttons to adjust copy settings (number of copies, reduce/enlarge, quality).
  4. Press OK to start copying.

Scanning:

  1. Place document on scanner glass.
  2. Press Scan button, then select "Scan to Computer" on the display.
  3. On your computer, use Canon scanning software or Windows/Mac built-in tools to start scan.

Maintenance & Cleaning

Keep printer clean for optimal performance. Unplug before cleaning.

  1. Exterior: Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use alcohol or solvents.
  2. Scanner glass: Clean with a soft, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water.
  3. Print head: Use the maintenance utility in printer software for nozzle checks and cleaning.
  4. Paper path: Remove any jammed paper carefully following guide in manual.

CAUTION! Never touch the print head nozzles. Do not use compressed air to clean inside the printer.
