Unpacking and Setup

Unpack and inspect contents. Place on a stable, level surface near a power outlet.

  1. Remove all tape and protective materials from the printer.
  2. Connect the power cord to the printer and plug into a wall outlet.
  3. Install the ink cartridges: Open the cover, wait for print head to move, insert cartridges into correct slots.
  4. Load paper: Adjust paper guides, place paper in the rear tray.
  5. Align print head: Use the printer software or control panel to perform alignment.

WARNING! Do not touch the print head or ink cartridge nozzles. Keep printer away from heat and humidity.

Installing Software & Drivers

Install the necessary software from the included CD or download from Canon website.

  1. Insert the Setup CD into your computer or download the software from support.usa.canon.com.
  2. Run the installer and follow on-screen instructions.
  3. Connect the printer to your computer using the USB cable when prompted.
  4. Complete the installation and restart your computer if required.

Control Panel and Functions

Access functions via the Control Panel buttons and LCD screen.

Loading Paper and Ink Cartridges

Paper: Use the rear paper tray. Ink: Install when prompted or when ink is low.

  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. For paper: Slide the paper guides, fan the paper stack, load print side down.
  3. For ink: Open the cover, wait for carriage to move, remove old cartridge, insert new one until it clicks.
  4. Close the cover. The printer will prime the ink system.

Tip: Use Canon genuine paper and ink for best results. Store ink in a cool, dry place.

Printing Documents and Photos

Supports printing from computer applications, memory cards (with optional adapter), and PictBridge cameras.

  1. Ensure printer is on and paper is loaded.
  2. From your computer: Select File > Print, choose "Canon PIXMA MP495" as printer, adjust settings as needed.
  3. For borderless photos: Select "Borderless" in print settings and use appropriate photo paper.
  4. For duplex printing: Enable "Two-Sided Printing" in the printer driver.
  5. Press Print and wait for output.
  6. For direct printing: Connect PictBridge camera via USB, use camera screen to select and print.

WARNING! Do not open covers or remove paper during printing. Allow prints to dry before handling.

Scanning and Copying

Scanning: Place document face down on scanner glass. Copying: Use the control panel or software.

  1. For scanning: Open scanner lid, place item, close lid. Use Canon software or Windows/Mac built-in tools to scan.
  2. For copying: Place original, press Copy button on control panel, select settings (color, number of copies), press Start.
  3. For ID card copy: Place card on glass, select ID Card Copy from menu, follow prompts to scan both sides.

Note: Clean scanner glass with a soft, lint-free cloth for clear scans.

Maintenance & Cleaning

Perform regular maintenance via the printer software or control panel.

Cleaning Print Head: Use Maintenance > Cleaning in printer software. Nozzle Check: Print pattern to verify ink flow. Exterior Cleaning: Unplug printer, use dry cloth; do not use alcohol or solvents. Scanner Glass: Clean with soft, dry cloth.
