Installation & Setup

Unpack and inspect contents. Place on a stable, level surface near a power outlet.

  1. Remove all packaging tape and protective materials from inside and outside the printer.
  2. Connect power: Plug the AC adapter into the printer and then into a wall outlet.
  3. Install ink cartridges: Open the cartridge cover, insert PG-245 (black) and CL-246 (color) cartridges into their respective slots, then close the cover.
  4. Load paper: Adjust the paper guides in the rear tray, then load plain paper print-side down.
  5. Power on: Press the POWER button. The printer will initialize and perform a cleaning cycle.

WARNING! Do not touch the print head or ink cartridge contacts. Ensure the printer is on a flat surface to prevent malfunction.

Loading Paper & Ink

Proper loading ensures optimal print quality and prevents paper jams.

  1. Paper: Adjust rear tray guides to match paper width. Load up to 100 sheets of plain paper (20 lb/75 gsm) print-side down. For envelopes or photo paper, use the manual feed slot.
  2. Ink Cartridges: Only use genuine Canon PG-245 and CL-246 cartridges. Open the cartridge cover, wait for the carriage to move to the center, remove old cartridges, insert new ones firmly until they click, then close the cover.

CAUTION! Do not turn off the printer during ink installation or initialization. Keep ink cartridges in their original packaging until ready to use.

Wireless Setup

Connect your printer to your Wi-Fi network for wireless printing from computers and mobile devices.

  1. Press the Setup button on the control panel.
  2. Use the arrow keys to select Device settings, then press OK.
  3. Select LAN settings > Wireless LAN setup.
  4. Select Standard setup and choose your network from the list.
  5. Enter your Wi-Fi password using the numeric keypad and on-screen prompts.
  6. Confirm the connection. The Wi-Fi light on the printer should be steady.

Tip: For Wi-Fi Direct (printing from mobile devices without a router), select "Wi-Fi Direct" in the LAN settings and follow the on-screen instructions.

Printing Documents

Print from your computer or mobile device after installing the Canon printer driver or app.

  1. Ensure the printer is powered on and connected (USB or Wi-Fi).
  2. On your computer, open the document and select File > Print.
  3. Select "Canon PIXMA MX490 series" as the printer.
  4. Adjust settings as needed: Paper size, quality (Draft/Standard/High), color mode, duplex.
  5. Click Print. The job will be sent to the printer.
  6. For mobile printing, use the Canon PRINT app (iOS/Android) or your device's native print function.

WARNING! Do not open covers or remove paper during printing. Allow print jobs to complete fully.

Scanning & Copying

Scanning to Computer:
1. Place document on scanner glass or in ADF.
2. On your computer, open Canon My Image Garden or your scanning software.
3. Select scan settings (resolution, file format, destination).
4. Click Scan. The scanned image will be saved to your specified folder.
Copying:
1. Place original on scanner glass or in ADF.
2. On the printer control panel, press the Black or Color copy button.
3. Use the arrow keys to adjust number of copies or darkness.
4. Press the OK button to start copying.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures print quality and extends printer life.

CAUTION! Unplug the printer before cleaning. Do not touch the scanner glass with fingers.

Troubleshooting
