Unpacking and Setup

Remove all packaging materials and tapes from the printer.

  1. Place the printer on a flat, stable surface near a power outlet.
  2. Connect the power cord to the printer and plug into an outlet.
  3. Turn on the printer using the power button.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts on the OLED display to select language and region.

WARNING! Do not touch the print head or ink cartridge contacts. Keep the printer horizontal during setup.

Installing Ink Cartridges

Install the provided or purchased genuine Canon ink cartridges.

  1. Open the front cover; the print head carrier moves to the center.
  2. Remove the protective tape from a new cartridge.
  3. Insert the black cartridge (PGI-280) into the left slot, color cartridges (CLI-281) into the right slots, matching colors.
  4. Push each cartridge until it clicks into place.
  5. Close the front cover. The printer will begin initial ink charging (approx. 2 minutes).

CAUTION! Do not turn off the printer during ink charging. Use only Canon PGI-280/CLI-281 cartridges.

Loading Paper

Use the rear paper feed tray for all paper types.

  1. Pull out the rear paper tray and extend the paper support.
  2. Adjust the paper guide to match the paper width.
  3. Load up to 100 sheets of plain paper (print side down) or photo paper (glossy side up).
  4. Adjust the paper guide snugly against the paper stack.
  5. On the OLED display, select the paper type and size to match your loaded media.

Tip: For best results, fan the paper stack before loading to prevent sticking.

Connecting to Your Computer

Connect via USB cable for direct printing.

  1. Turn on both printer and computer.
  2. Connect the USB cable (Type B) to the printer and to your computer's USB port.
  3. Install the printer driver:
    • Insert the setup CD-ROM and follow on-screen instructions, OR
    • Download the latest driver from support.usa.canon.com.
  4. Follow the installation wizard to complete setup.

Wireless Setup

Connect the printer to your Wi-Fi network for wireless printing.
